KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN
(CAST CD30)
Review by Steve Taylor (1st June 96)

This is a superb recording of the London production. The sound quality is top notch and includes all the wonderful metal clanging effects used throughout the show. It is often a good recommendation of a show if the recording gives you enough to feel that you'd seen the show even if you haven't. This one does just that.

For those lucky enough to have seen it you can't hear the CD without recalling images from the show. Brent Carver has a wonderful voice, powerful yet very vunerable in songs such as "Mama, it's me" and "She's a woman". Anthony Crivello is superb especially in "The Day After That" (who can forget the stunning staging of this with the cast holding placards of missing people).

But the CD HAS to be bought for the performance of Chita Rivera. She created this role and no-one could replace her (I saw Bebe Nuewrith after it was re-cast here and she wasn't a patch on Ms Rivera). I only have to here her sing the title track and visualise the incredible projected spider's web with her face picked out in a pin-point followspot to get that goose-bump tingle factor.

A memorable show and a truely stunning CD....and at the new low price it is a bargain of the highest order.
