RENT
Judging from the recording, the show must have been quite humorous as well as having a serious side. The music is a mixture of Rock, Pop and Soul, but tamed to suit theatre. The result is an interesting join between these distinctive styles and theatre songs. The show's best known song 'Seasons Of Love' makes a stirring ensemble number and the collective effort of the youthful and well sung cast gives a delightful sound. There are many highlights on this Double CD album, especially the title song and Another Day, which shows off Adam Pascal's vocal strength. His rendition of One Song Glory is another special moment, and 'Take Me Or Leave Me' (performed by Idina Menzel and Fredi Walker) is not only funny but has a great tune. 'Without You' which appears in the second half, though simple, achieves the feeling of sadness, and the combination of Adam Pascal and Daphne Rubin-Vega is irresistible. I am sorry to keep mentioning Adam Pascal but he does shine on the recording, but I do not wish to give the impression that this show is a star vehicle, quite the opposite. This show requires a strong group for it to really work , and the entire Broadway cast inject plenty of energy into all their numbers. The five piece band gives an amazingly rich sound, which compliments the singers' voices. Without question RENT was a hot ticket whilst it ran in London. Larson had set out to bring a younger audience to the theatre and he succeeded. For that all musicals lovers must be grateful, and for such a strong musical work as the vehicle. I do hope RENT returns in the future, for in its own unique way it is very, very special.
