The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse - First Shows


The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, the new 340-seat Indoor Jacobean Theatre at Shakespeare's Globe, announces its first productions and events from 9 Jan 2014.

Named by the founder of the Shakespeare Globe, American actor and director Sam Wanamaker, the venue will allow Shakespeare's Globe to present plays throughout the year. The theatre will have two tiers of galleried seating and a pit seating area and will be predominantly lit by candles.

Public booking opens 14 May 2013.

The Duchess of Malfi by John Webster, directed by Dominic Dromgoole, from 9 Jan to 16 Feb 2014. Charts the calamitous consequences of a young widow's refusal to obey her brothers' command never to remarry.

The Knight of the Burning Pestle by Francis Beaumont, from 20 Feb to 30 March 2014. A grocer and his wife dissatisfied by a play's progress invade the stage and commandeer the play to suit their tastes.

L’Ormindo a co production with Royal Opera, from 25 March to 12 April 2014. Music by Francesco Cavalli; Libretto by Giovanni Faustini; English Translation by Christopher Cowell. Directed by Kasper Holten, performed by Orchestra of the Early Opera Company. 'An outrageous comedy about a sex-starved young queen and her two would-be lovers'

The Malcontent by John Marston, from 3 to 19 April 2014. Performed by Globe Young Players, a new company of talented 12-to-16-year-olds. A usurping Duke, allied to a disloyal wife and surrounded by panderers, flatterers and sycophants, threatens the stability and security of a whole society.
