Marguerite to close early 13 Sep 2008

The new musical, Marguerite, has posted early closing notices and will now have its final performance on 13 Sep 2008. (It was originally booking to 1 Nov 2008, but is now replaced with "Girl With A Pearl Earring", a new play by David Joss Buckley ) .

Marguerite opened at the Haymarket Theatre 20 May 2008, following previews from 7 May, to mixed notices from the popular press: THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Engaging production." THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "There's no real tension in the writing, while the characterisation is flaccid in the extreme." THE TIMES says, " Decent, enjoyable but not exactly thrilling show." THE INDEPENDENT says, "A compelling, if flawed, new work." THE GUARDIAN says, "Fast-moving production."

Marguerite has music by Michel Legrand, book by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg and Jonathan Kent, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer from the original French lyrics by Alain Boublil and orchestrations and arrangements by Michel Legrand and Seann Alderking.

Directed by Jonathan Kent, the cast includes Ruthie Henshall, Julian Ovenden, Alexander Hanson.

A love story set in Paris during the Second World War, Marguerite draws inspiration from one of the greatest of romantic novels, La Dame aux Camellias by Alexandre Dumas. Marguerite is the beautiful and notorious mistress of a high ranking German officer. Armand is a young musician half her age who falls obsessively in love with her. Their dangerous love story is played out against the background of Occupied Paris.
