Shakespeare's 'first theatre' found!
It is reported that the remains of the theatre where Shakespeare's plays were first performed are thought to have been recovered following an archaeological dig at a site in Shoreditch, east London, which is being prepared for the building of a new theatre for the Tower Theatre Company.
A spokesman for the Museum of London, who are carrying out the archaeological dig, said it had long been known that an open air playhouse, called The Theatre, stood in this area, but traces of its exact location had proved elusive.
It is said that William Shakespeare performed as part of The Lord Chamberlain's Men company of players, and had his first plays performed at this theatre, which was built in 1576, and that when the theatre was dismantled its timbers were used to construct The Globe in 1599.
