Sweden's greatest painter, Edgar Lutzen, makes the radical decision to renounce art and devote his life to the pursuit of alchemy - the hidden practice of turning base metal into gold. As he descends into a world feverish with sinister omens and the occult, his marriage collapses and his professional reputation is ruined.
