"ART" TO CLOSE 4 JAN 03 / LEAGUE OF GENTLEMEN JOIN CAST 14 OCT 02



Art has posted closing notices at the Whitehall Theatre. The last performance will be on 4 Jan 2003.

Colin Haigh (Marc), Gareth Harris (Serge), Michael Gyngell (Yvan) have joined the cast.

The League of Gentlemen (Mark Gatiss (Serge), Steve Pemberton (Marc), Reece Shearsmith (Yvan) join the cast from 14 Oct 02. They will be the 27th cast of the London production.

The League of Gentlemen started life on the London Fringe in 1995. Following their Edinburgh Fringe appearance in 1996, they were signed by the BBC to record the radio series "On the Town with the League of Gentlemen", which was broadcast in 1997, winning a Sony Silver Award. They won the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival in 1997. Their first television series "The League of Gentlemen" was transmitted on BBC2 in January 1999. The programme won both the Golden Rose of Montreux and RTS Awards for 'Best Entertainment' in 1999. The second series was transmitted in Jan 02, winning a BAFTA Award for 'Best Comedy 2000'. The League of Gentlemen made their West End stage debut in March 01 in their own show "A Local Show For Local People", at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

Art by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton, opened in London at Wyndham's Theatre on 15th Oct 1996 starring Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay and Ken Stott, and won both the Evening Standard Drama Award and the Laurence Olivier Award for 'Best Comedy'.

The show transferred to the Whitehall Theatre in October 2001 where it will close 4 Jan 03

The play is directed by Matthew Warchus (Re-directed by Nigel Havers) . It is designed by Mark Thompson and produced by David Pugh Limited and Sean Connery.

The story concerns the relationship between three friends that is turned upon its head when one of them purchases a work of modern art.
