Salman Rushdie's "Midnight's Children" at Barbican in Jan 03

Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children, produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company with Columbia University & the University of Michigan/University Musical Society, will open at the Barbican Theatre on 29th Jan 03, following previews from 18th Jan 03 for a limited run to 23rd Feb 03, when it will then go to America before returning for a UK tour.

This is a new dramatisation by Simon Reade, Tim Supple and Salman Rushdie.

Zubin Varla will play the leading role of Saleem. His London theatre credits include "Beautiful Thing" at the Duke of York's in 1994; "Jesus Christ Superstar" at the Lyceum in 1996, Romeo in "Romeo and Juliet" in 1996 , the title role in "Roberto Zucco" in 1999; "Antigone" at the Old Vic in 1999, and most recently Caliban in "The Tempest" in 2000.

The play is directed by Tim Supple, designed by Melly Still, with lighting by Tina MacHugh.

Midnight's Children is a complex work combining three main tales: the turbulent history of twentieth-century India, Pakistan and Bangladesh: the saga of a Muslim family: and the story of one man, Saleem Sinai, whose telepathic powers allow him to communicate with other children born at the stroke of midnight on August 15, 1947.
