Sara Kestelman- CelebriTeas
Royal National Theatre

Review by Darren Dalglish
4th Sep 1998

Celebriteas is a great afternoon's entertainment, which is both relaxing and interesting. I try each year to see all six guests. However, this year I missed the first three because I was on holiday. Sara Kestelman was the last guest of this series. Having seen the last two Celebriteas with Ruthie Henshall and Maureen Lipman, which were very entertaining, I have to say that this one did not quite have the same magic.

Sara Kestelman is currently playing Margrethe Bohr in Michael Frayn's 'Copenhagen' in the Cottesloe. She is a very busy actress working in the theatre and television. She has been seen recently on BBC Television as Group Captain Susan Preston in the Sci-Fi series 'Invasion Earth'. Although she has been in theatre for many years, I first noticed her last year when she played 'La Fleur' in "Nine" at the Donmar Warehouse where she put in a brilliant performance.

Sara has worked extensively with The Royal Shakespeare Company and The Royal National Theatre. She won an Olivier Award for Best Supporting Performance in a Musical for her part as 'Fraulein Schneider' in "Cabaret" at the Donmar Warehouse.

Sara has also taken to writing poetry. In fact a book has just been published called 'A Two Hander' which contains poems written by her and actress Susan Penhaligon. A platform performance with Sara reading selections of her verse will be at the Cottesloe Theatre at 5pm on 6th Oct 98.

Sara told us that she was a very unhappy person worrying about everything until she reached the age of 38. At this age she suddenly started to enjoy life more. She did not go into why she was so unhappy, but she gave the impression that at one time in her life she considered suicide!

This Celebritea was not one of the most entertaining. This is mostly I think because Sara had obviously had many unhappy moments in her life. Normally, most guests have many funny stories to tell, but Sara did not have any! Nevertheless it was still a warm and relaxing event and happily Sara is now enjoying her life and career.
