Six Characters in Search of an Author
at the Gielgud Theatre

Genre: Drama
Opened 15 Sep 2008
Written: by Luigi Pirandello, in a new version by Rupert Goold and Ben Power
Directed: Rupert Goold
Cast: Ian McDiarmid (Father)
Produced: Royal Court
Synopsis: Six characters arrive unannounced during the editing of a documentary film. Unfinished characters desperately in search of an author, the documentary producer agrees to let them film their story. Pirandello’s exploration of reality and the blurred border between fiction and life, between the stage and the world outside, is transported into the 21st Century in this new version.

What the popular press had to say.....
NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Pirandello’s spooky, 1920s classic of family trauma and metaphysical shockwaves has been given a seriously thrilling makeover." MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Goold's production captures the chaos and pain of the disruptive family and the dark fear that lies at the heart of Pirandello's play." GERALD BERKOWITZ for THE STAGE says, "A bit too clever for its own good." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Goold and Ben Power's adaptation is clever and sometimes clever-clever, but what struck me on a second viewing was that it fully acknowledged the intellectual author's often underrated capacity for strong feeling." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "Thrilling production." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "An exhilarating booster jab of radical reinvention and rampant imagination."
