The Theatreland walking tour is presented by The Society Of London Theatre (SOLT) & Secret London Walks (www.secretlondonwalks.co.uk)
The 2011 Theatreland Walking tour led by Blue Badge Guide Diane Burstein starts south of the river in what was once a centre of music halls and variety theatres with the Old Vic. Discover how the Old Vic's formidable manager Lilian Baylis bought Shakespeare and the classics to South London. We move on to the Young Vic and the National Theatre via some atmospheric Georgian backstreets and then cross the bridge to Covent Garden, the West End's first Theatreland. Featured sites include London's oldest playhouse, the theatre which was once the home to actor/composer Ivor Novello, the theatre which played host to London's shortest lived play and the site of the theatre where a bag of sweets gained you admission. The tour covers London's theatrical history from court masques to the present day.
NOTE: The tour does not involve backstage tours of any of the theatres and will go ahead if it rains.
