Designed by C.J.Phipps Opened on 10th October 1881 with the opera "Patience". On the 3rd of June 1929 it was demolished . Frank tugwell designed a new one and the theatre re-opened on 21st October 1929 with Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Gondoliers. On 12th February 1990 it was ravaged by fire, but was restored to the 1929 version by Sir William Whitfield. It re-opened on 19th July 1993 in the presence of the Princess of Wales. The Theatre is currently owned by Ambassador Theatre Group.
