About Backstairs Billy

See Penelope Wilton and Luke Evans star in this new regal comedy at the Duke of York Theatre. Book Backstairs Billy tickets on London Theatre today.

Discover the story behind one of the Royal Family’s most well-known and devoted servants — William Tallon. He served as the Queen Mother’s longtime Steward and Page of the Backstairs who worked in the Royal Household for over 50 years.

Loosely inspired by historical events, Backstairs Billy depicts the unusual friendship between Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (aka the Queen Mother) and her faithful, mischievous, fun-loving page William Tallon (better known as Backstairs Billy) amidst a particularly challenging time for the Royal Family and for the country at large.

During the viciously cold and stormy winter of 1979, unions across England went on strike. With labour disputes and political discord knocking at the door, the Queen Mother and Billy both will have to come to terms with the harsh realities beyond the luxurious world of Clarence House and the consequences that ensue.

Backstairs Billy marks playwright Marcelo Dos Santos's West End debut. Tony and Olivier award-winning director Michael Grandage will direct.

Joyful, Great writing, Great acting, Entertaining, Delightful

See it if You want a joyful, funny play that's easy to watch, has 2 brilliant leading actors (and has a bit of crude humour!)

Don’t see it if You're not interested in the royal family, or you're easily offended. It's set in the 70s so the language used reflects this.
