The Collaboration Information

Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope play rival artists turned associates in The Collaboration, a new play opening at the Young Vic in spring 2022. The Collaboration tickets will be available on London Theatre soon.

The Collaboration play explores the intimate relationship between two artists in 1980s New York. During the decade, once-prominent artists like Andy Warhol lose their energy. At the same time, up-and-coming artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat take over New York City. On the surface, Warhol and Basquiat’s styles wouldn’t create a pretty picture. Combining pop art, rap music, and hip-hop culture into street art shouldn't work. But when Warhol and Basquiat decide to collaborate for an exhibition — Zenith — their work becomes the talk of the town.

During their shared journey, Warhol and Basquiat begin to share their secrets with one another. In doing so, their worlds are redrawn, their paints are mixed in different ways, and their artistry styles change.

Paul Bettany portrays Andy Warhol in The Collaboration at the Young Vic. The acclaimed actor is best known for playing J.A.R.V.I.S/Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, notably starring in Wandavision. Jeremy Pope will play Jean-Michel Basquiat. The Tony-nominated actor recently starred in Ain’t Too Proud - The Life and Times of the Temptations on Broadway. The Collaboration play is also being adapted into a feature film, however it's unknown if Bettany and Pope will continue in their roles.

The Collaboration is by Anthony McCarten, a New Zealand-based playwright. Currently, he’s working on many projects, including A Beautiful Noise, a Neil Diamond bio-musical, which will premiere in Boston in 2022. Young Vic artistic director Kwame Kwei-Armah directs The Collaboration.

Tickets to The Collaboration will be available soon.

Our review

What is art? And what is art’s role in society? Is creative expression derivative? Or is it putting the world in a larger context, commenting on the very thing from which it takes inspiration? These are questions that have always plagued artists, collectors, curators, and enthusiasts, and Anthony McCarten’s new play The Collaboration, about the 1980s partnership between Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, dramatises the age-old conundrum. McCarten doesn’t offer anything particularly new in his...
