The week after Thanksgiving. A bed & breakfast in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. A cheerful innkeeper. A young couple struggling to stay together. Thousands of inanimate objects, watching.

An uncanny new play by Annie Baker, whose Pulitzer Prize-winning The Flick had a sold-out run at the National in 2016. James Macdonald directs.

Our John Review

Theatrical marmite doesn't come more pungently or demandingly flavoured than this: the UK premiere of Annie Baker's latest is the strangest new play in many a long day (and even longer night).

Wednesday, January 10, 2018

Images have been released showing the cast of Annie Baker’s new play John in rehearsals for the production, which opens in the Dorfman at the National Theatre later this month. The play is about a couple from Brooklyn on the rocks who arrive at a bed and breakfast in Gettysburg the week after Thanksgiving. John stars Tom Mothersdale (Oil, Almeida) and Anneika Rose (Nell Gwynn) with June Watson (Road, Royal Court), Marylouise Burke (Into the Woods, Broadway) and Heather Rome (The Glass Menagerie).
