The European premiere of The Toxic Avenger ran at the Southwark Playhouse from 22 April to 21 May 2016 with an official opening on 26 April 2016. Mark Anderson, Hannah Grover, Lizzii Hills, Marc Pickering and Ashley Samuels starred in the musical produced by Katy Lipson for Aria Entertainment in association with the King's Head Theatre, Guy James and Szpiezak Productions.

The citizens of Tromaville are crying out for a hero - enter Melvin Ferd the Third, an aspiring earth scientist determined to clean up the toxic waste problem. But when a corrupt Mayor and her government goons try to stop this heroic feat, Melvin is tossed into a vat of toxic waste and transformed into The Toxic Avenger, New Jersey’s first superhero!

It’s a weird idea for a musical: a dweeby teenager, Melvin, falls into a vat of toxic waste, and emerges Toxie, a mutant with super-human strength who uses it to stop an evil corporation from polluting his hometown. Musicals with a message about global warming may be thin on the ground, but this sharp and well-presented musical manages to satirically deliver its sermon in a frivolously entertaining way. The Southwark Playhouse continues its reputation for serving up UK premières of off-Broadway curiosity pieces that would otherwise not get a professional London outing. Casting has been announced for the West End transfer of The Toxic Avenger, which opens at the Arts Theatre in September.  With a book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro and music and lyrics by David Bryan, The Toxic Avenger is a musical based on Lloyd Kaufman’s 1984 film about a geeky man who lands in a barrel of toxic waste and transforms into a monster.
