Meera Syal to take over as West End’s Miss Hannigan in Annie

Meera Syal

Comedian Meera Syal is set to take over as Miss Hannigan in the west End production of Annie, which runs at the Piccadilly Theatre.

The role is currently played by Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood, who took over from actress Miranda Hart, who made her theatre debut in the role.

Syal will replace Horwood for performances from 27th November, and will play the role until February 2018.

Meera Syal’s previous stage credits include playing the Nurse in Kenneth Branagh’s Romeo and Juliet at the Garrick Theatre last year, and playing Shirley Valentine in a one-woman show at Trafalgar Studios and the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2010. She is also an accomplished playwright, working on the book for the 2002 production of Bombay Dreams, which was produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber. She is also well-known for her appearances on screen in Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars at No. 42.

Nikolai Foster, artistic director at Curve in Leicester, directs this West End production, which has a book by Thomas Meehan with a score by Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin. It tells the story of the little orphan Annie, who is forced to live a miserable live at the hands of orphanage caretaker Miss Hannigan. Annie finds a stroke of luck as billionaire Oliver Warbucks invites Annie to stay for Christmas, but Hannigan hatches a spiteful plan to bring Annie back.

Meera Syal will take over from Craig Revel Horwood on 27th November (Horwood’s last performance will be 26th November).

Annie is booking at the Piccadilly Theatre until 18th February.
