It’s been highlighted in much of the promotional material around Waitress that Sara Bareilles’ musical is staged by an all-female creative team – a first for West End theatre.
With a book by Jessie Nelson, Diane Paulus directs the production which features choreography by Lorin Latarro, and musical arrangements by Nadia Digiallonardo. It is, of course, also based on the film by the late Adrienne Shelley.
It also tells a woman’s story; Katharine McPhee plays a pie-loving waitress called Jenna who is trapped in an abusive relationship, and is looking for an escape.
As previews for the musical get underway, we asked cast members Marisha Wallace, Peter Hannah, Stephen Leask and Shaun Prendergast whether the rehearsal process with an all-female team was different to their previous experiences putting a production together.
