I was born on 6th September 1960 in Warsop, Nottinghamshire, in England.
I was a postman for 18 years from 1979 to 1997.
I moved to London in 1990 (I was able to transfer with Royal Mail) as after 11 years as a postman in a small town I
wanted more from life - London seemed the obvious choice!
In 1994, aged 33 years old, I went to my first theatre show to see Rough Justice at the Apollo Theatre, Shaftesbury
Avenue. I was instantly hooked! I spent all my money on seeing all the West End shows and as much fringe as I could. I
would spend my holidays going to shows and as I was seeing so many I would buy the cheapest seats in the Balcony,
about £5 to £8 at the time, which was all I could afford on a postman's wage.
Little did I know my life was to change when the world wide web came around commercially in 1994/95. When I connected to
the internet at this time web browsers were very new and you could not even view images! In anycase, I searched for
London theatre and I could not find anything, except a mailing list which sent West End show information once a month,
which I noticed was out of date, so I decided to start my own www.londontheatre.co.uk - It was to my knowledge the first dedicated London
theatre Guide on the web! Within a year many more theatre web sites started to pop up. Nowadays, there are hundreds!!
I had to learn basic html to create my first web pages! The other problem was that my education was not good, resulting
in poor grammar. This was a problem, particularly when I started to write reviews, so I went to night school for two
courses 'Brush Up Your Grammar Part 1' and 'Brush Up your Grammar Part 2'! Now I can correct my grammar from my reviews
from the 90s, although my grammar is still not perfect! Fortunately, I pay someone to write the reviews nowadays.
In 1996, I had sponsorship from a London ticket agent and by 1997 was earning almost as much as a postman so quit my
secure job to work on my theatre guide full time.
Today, londontheatre.co.uk is one of the highest ranking and reliable
sites for London theatre information.
It generates millions of pounds worth of ticket sales every year making it a very profitable business.
In August 2003, I created The New York Theatre Guide
In December 2014 I sold my business and retired!
I am very passionate about animal rights and I became a vegetarian in 1996. My politics are left leaning!!
Besides theatre, I also enjoy travel, art, F1 motor racing and tennis.
I enjoy Italian film music, particularly from the 70s, with my favourite composers being Stelvio Cipriani, Franco
Micalizzi, Ennio Morricone, Nicola Piovani, Bruno Nicolai.
My favourite tv shows include Star Trek, Frasier, Golden Girls, Alf, Roseanne. I also enjoy Poirot with David Suchet,
Inspector Morse and Columbo.
