Marys Seacole Information
You may know of Mary Seacole through school history lessons, historical documentaries or by visiting museums. But there is more to Mary Seacole than the stories passed down through generations and what meets the eye. Discover more about the pioneering Jamaican businesswoman and Crimean war nurse in Marys Seacole at the Donmar Warehouse. Marys Seacole tickets are available now on London Theatre.
As expected, the Marys Seacole play follows the titular character throughout her life. Wherever Seacole finds herself, she’s always caring for others, whether it be by her own volition or she’s paid to do so. She works in a nursing home, she serves as a nurse during the Crimean War — Seacole really does it all. But by the end of her life, Seacole still doesn’t have the ability to care for one thing, her own story.
Jackie Sibblies Drury’s Marys Seacole play premiered in New York in 2019. The Pulitzer-winning playwright's previous works include Fairview, Really and Social Creatures. In a Marys Seacole review for New York Theatre Guide, the critic said: There is more than one Mary Seacole to meet the eye in Marys Seacole - an extraordinary celebration of a play. This is the style of the play and the lasting echo that follows you out the door.”
Mary Seacole’s life is honoured in London through the Mary Seacole Trust, a group that sets out to promote Mary Seacole as a source of inspiration for a diverse and inclusive society. There’s even a statue of Mary Seacole in London, located at St Thomas’ Hospital — and it’s the first statue dedicated to a Black woman in the United Kingdom.
Marys Seacoles London performances are at the Donmar Warehouse. The Donmar Warehouse typically houses works previously seen in New York: upcoming shows include A Doll’s House - Part 2 and The Band’s Visit.
