About Bugsy Malone The Musical

Plan a trip to Fat Sam’s Grand Slam speakeasy at Bugsy Malone in London.

Set in 1920s New York, the Bugsy Malone musical parodises the Prohibition era mobster lifestyle — children play the gangsters who carry guns loaded with whipped cream instead of bullets.

At the start of Bugsy Malone, audiences meet Bugsy, a “nice guy” and one-time boxer dreaming of a life with Blousey Brown. As he meets speakeasy singer Tallulah, Bugsy is caught in a complicated live triangle. He's also stuck in a feud between rivals Fat Sam and Dandy Dan. Can Bugsy make the right decisions?

Bugsy Malone started out at Lyric Hammersmith in 2015, picking up an Olivier nomination for Best Musical Revival. In a Bugsy Malone London Theatre review, our critic said: “the numbers burst with a new kind of vigour and rigour, yet the infectious sense of fun remains utterly undiminished.”

Bugsy Malone premiered in 1976, starring Scott Baio as Bugsy, Jodie Foster as Tallulah, Mark Curry as Oscar deVelt, and Bonnie Langford as Lena Marelli. Bugsy picked up a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture (Musical/Comedy), and an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song Score. The Bugsy Malone London musical includes film songs such as “Bad Guys,” “My Name is Tallulah,” and “You Give a Little Love.”

The Bugsy Malone musical premiered at Her Majesty's Theatre in 1983, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones as Tallulah. Sheridan Smith then played Tallulah in Bugsy Malone in 1997.

When is Bugsy Malone set?

Bugsy Malone is set in late 1920s New York. 1920s America is synonymous with the Prohibition Era — the 18th Amendment banned the sales, transportation, and production of alcohol essentially banned all alcoholic substances.

Bugsy Malone follows the lives of showgirls, gangsters, and those in search of a new life. Elements of Bugsy Malone are inspired by the lives of notorious criminals Bugs Moran and Al Capone.

Where can I watch Bugsy Malone?

Bugsy Malone is available to watch at Alexandra Palace Theatre. Bugsy Malone is in London as part of the show’s national tour. You can get Bugsy Malone London tickets on London Theatre.
