About Mrs President

In a rare non-singing role, Kaela Settle showcases her prowess and power as a dramatic actress in Mrs President at Charing Cross Theatre. Book Mrs President tickets on London Theatre.

Mrs President is a play that tells the story of Mary Lincoln (Kaela Settle), who is in the throes of grief from the loss of her husband, as well as the deaths of multiple children. The world accuses her of treason, and she’s shunned. In desperation, Mary turns to the first-ever celebrity photographer, Mathew Brady (played by Hal Fowler), with the goal of reclaiming her story. Mary sits for a series of portrait sessions, as each photograph is taken, more layers of Mary are unraveled, exposing the woman behind the photograph. However, as their collaboration continues, it becomes a struggle for control and authorship.

This production was first staged in 2024, also at Charing Cross Theatre. Following a workshop period in New York, the story has been reimagined, adding even more depth and layers to the portrait of a former first lady.

Mrs President in London has an exceptional creative team, it’s written by the historian and playwright John Ransom Phillips and is directed by Bronagh Lagan. The set design by Anna Kelsey is sure to grab the audience’s attention, and the projections by Matt Powell add an incredible depth to the production.

As the London Pub Theatres review said, it’s “a compelling insight into a sometimes neglected historical figure.”

Mrs President is one of two shows currently in the West End about Mary Lincoln. Oh, Mary! is a comedic play about the wife of the 16th American President, Abraham Lincoln. While Mrs President, is a more dramatic portrayal of Mary Lincoln and the struggles and losses she faced.
