Jack Thorne's festive retelling returns
Our Review 4 / 5

Esteemed writer Jack Thorne's joyous, atmospheric adaptation of the timeless Charles Dickens classic returns to The Old Vic following a successful run last Christmas. This new adaptation comes from the Olivier Award-winning playwright of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Jack Thorne, who returns to the theatre following Woyzeck, alongside Old Vic artistic director Matthew Warchus at the helm.

Based on Charles Dickens' beloved work, the play follows Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas Eve, when he is visited by three ghosts, each showing him either scenes from his past, a view of the present of a peek into the future forcing the grumpy business owner to reevaluate his priorities and take stock on his life, just in time for Christmas morning.

As the production returns to the Old Vic for a fourth year in succession, casting is unknown. Last year's cast featured Paterson Joseph star as Scrooge, following Rhys Ifans and Stephen Tompkinson who have previously played the role. The cast of the production also included Melissa Allan, Fred Haig, Rebecca Trehearn, Maria Omakinwa and Gloria Onitiri.

On a bitter Christmas Eve night a cold-hearted miser is visited by four ghosts. Transported to worlds past, present and future, Ebenezer Scrooge witnesses what a lifetime of fear and selfishness has led to and sees with fresh eyes the lonely life he has built for himself. Can Ebenezer be saved before it’s too late?

Our Review of A Christmas Carol

4/5

Charles Dickens's fable A Christmas Carol - originally published as a novella in 1843 which he subsequently performed himself in public readings - has become as much a part of the festive season as the Queen's Christmas Message, carol concerts and mince pies. The Old Vic's stage version - back for a third consecutive year and also now running simultaneously on Broadway - could very well be added to this list to become an annual staple in Waterloo, just as the tradition of the...
