‘Watch on the Rhine’, starring Patricia Hodge, sets full cast

Lillian Hellman’s play opens at the Donmar Warehouse next month.

Patricia Hodge will lead the cast of Watch on the Rhine at the Donmar Warehouse this winter. Watch on the Rhine begins previews on 9 December, ahead of an opening night on 15 December, and performances to 4 Feb. 2023.

Set in early 1940s America, Watch on the Rhine follows widow Fanny Farrelly. She’s waiting for her daughter and her son-in-law to leave Europe and return home. But as the war progresses, secrets are revealed.

Ellen McDougall directs Lillian Hellman’s Watch on the Rhine in London. Patricia Hodge plays Fanny Farrelly, joined by Kate Duchêne, Caitlin FitzGerald, John Light, Carlyss Peer, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Mark Waschke, David Webber, Finley Glasgow, Tamar Laniado, Chloe Raphael, Bertie Caplan and Henry Hunt.

The production features design by Basia Bińkowska, lighting design by Azusa Ono, and sound design by Tingying Dong.

Upcoming shows at the Donmar Warehouse include Diana Nneka Atuona’s Trouble in Butetown, and the UK premiere of Next to Normal.
