Journey into an Irish Pub in the early 1900’s on the wildest day of one man’s life in The Playboy of the Western World. This comedic drama is by John Millington Synge, with this brilliant revival directed by Caitríona McLaughlin. Book The Playboy of the Western World tickets on London Theatre.
The incredible cast includes Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton), Éanna Hardwicke (The Sixth Commandment), Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls), as well as Declan Conlon, Lorcan Cranitch, Megan Cusack, and Marty Rea.
Set in rural Ireland, this play tells the story of Christy Mahon who walks into a pub and confesses to killing his father. To his surprise, the villagers don’t respond in poor taste. Instead, they revel. Suddenly, the community has a new legend to worship. Pegeen Flaherty, the barmaid, finds that her own life is cracking open with the possibility of something new and exciting. As Christy’s tale grows taller, the attention grows hotter, until someone arrives who threatens to expose the truth.
First performed in Dublin in 1907, Synge’s three-act show became infamous for the trouble it caused. Riots broke out in Dublin by angry locals who believed the show was an insult to morale and to Ireland. It’s a play that challenged the romantic myths about rural Ireland while remaining humourous, and shining a light on status and the stories we create about ourselves and others.
The Playboy of the Western World in London is directed by Caitríona McLaughlin, the Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. Alongside her is a formidable creative team, including set and costume design by Katie Davenport, lighting by James Farncombe, and sound by Adrienne Quartly.
The Playboy of the Western World is a play that is equal parts hilarious and surprisingly tender. It’s a true classic that is a thrilling night of theatre about myth-making, and the cost of living up to the standards that others set for you.
