About The Authenticator

Navigate the journey of one woman as she stumbles upon a disturbing find in her inherited home in The Authenticator, Winsome Pinnock’s gripping psychological thriller, directed by Miranda Cromwell. Book The Authenticator tickets on London Theatre.

The Authenticator is a play about Fenella Harford, an artist who inherits her ancestor’s home, Harford Hall, where she discovers a slew of hidden journals with dark secrets buried within them. She brings in a young academic, Marva, to determine whether or not the journals are authentic. Marva is joined by mentor Abi, who helps to expertly guide the investigation, but their discoveries turn into so much more than just history. As the women dig deeper into the estate and the family who built it, they uncover disturbing evidence of enslavement and horrific violence.

What was supposed to be a determination of authenticity regarding familial artifacts, as well as an act of scholarship for Marva and Abi, slowly turns into a reckoning of racism and the stories that we all prefer to hide about ourselves.

This production reunites Pinnock with director Miranda Cromwell following their collaboration on Rockets and Blue Lights. The show also boasts a formidable cast, including Rakie Ayola as Abi, Sylvestra Le Touzel as Fen, and Cherrelle Skeete as Marva.

Alongside the cast is the incredible creative team, consisting of set designer Jon Bausor, costume designer Kinnetia Isidore, lighting designer Aideen Malone, sound designer Tingying Dong, and composer Femi Temowo.

The Authenticator in London masterfully blends the vibe of a spooky haunted house with humor while balancing contemporary questions about identity, race, and politics. With strong performances from the cast, this play is not only entertaining but also thought-provoking, asking the audience to investigate the biases that live within us all.
