Susannah York died of cancer at the age of 72

Actress Susannah York, died of "advanced bone marrow cancer" on 15 January 2011, six days after her 72nd birthday.

She became famous in films in the 1960s/70s, including Tunes of Glory (1960), The Greengage Summer (1961), Tom Jones (1963), The Killing of Sister George (1968), Battle of Britain (1969), They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969), Images (1972). She played Superman's mother Lara in Superman (1978), Superman II (1980) and Superman IV (1987)

Her London stage credits in recent years include Miracle at the Leicester Square Theatre and Quartet at the Richmond theatre and tour in 2010; The Lady of Larkspur Lotion at the New End theatre in 2009, Walking On Water at the White Bear in 2008; The Final Shot at the Theatre503 in 2007.

In 2003, she had a recurring role as hospital manager Helen Grant in the BBC1 television drama series Holby City.
