About South Pacific

The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, South Pacific, returns to London in summer 2022. The Chichester Festival Theatre production transfers to London for a limited run, and you can see South Pacific on stage. South Pacific tickets are available on London Theatre now.

The South Pacific musical is based on James A. Michener’s Pulitzer-winning 1947 fiction stories, Tales of the South Pacific. During the show, audiences meet Nellie Forbush, an American woman who is stationed on an unnamed island in the south Pacific during the war. While serving her country, Nellie finds herself swooning over Emile de Becque, a local plantation owner.

The South Pacific London cast is led by two West End stars: Gina Beck as Nellie, and Julian Ovenden as Emile de Becque.

As expected from a musical set in World War Two, the South Pacific story utilises war terminology. In order to ensure accuracy and to avoid anachronisms, Rodgers and Hammerstein teamed up with Joshua Logan to enhance the musical storylines.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein musical also features a beloved theatre score. Listen out for songs such as "I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair" and "Bali Ha’i".

South Pacific last played in London in 2011 at the Barbican, starring Samantha Womack and Paulo Szot and Jason Howard alternating as Emile. Before then, Trevor Nunn directed South Pacific at the National Theatre in 2001. This London production continues the decade gap between performances.

Great singing, Dated, Delightful

See it if you love classic musicals with brilliant and memorable scores, some fabulous choreography and some stunning singing.

Don’t see it if you don't like old fashioned musicals and want something that feels more relevant to the current day.

Relevant, Epic, Great singing

See it if You enjoy the Golden age of Musical Theatre. Great staging and some stunning performances. Very relevant in terms of its themes on racism.

Don’t see it if You don't like slow building musicals. Characters have problematic views and some offensive language is used. The musical does not condone.

Enchanting, Great staging, Great singing, Absorbing

See it if You love a classic musical with big staging and beautiful songs.

Don’t see it if You prefer a show that's fast paced. South Pacific slowly builds throughout (but is still engaging to watch!)
