Deaf Republic is a play that tells the story of a deaf boy who is tragically killed when he disobeys orders that he wasn’t able to hear. The next day, the entire town wakes up deaf.
This stunning play creatively combines spoken English, British Sign Language (BSL), creative captioning, and silence to bring this story to life. The show brings together deaf and hearing actors, aerial performers, puppetry, live cinema as well as poetry.
This production stars Romel Belcher (A Doll’s House), Caoimhe Coburn Gray (Two Hundred Deer to Every Lion), Derbhle Crotty (The Alice Trilogy), Kate Finegan (Dream Factory), Eoin Gleeson (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), and Lisa Kelly (My Mother Said I Never Should).
Deaf Republic in London is written and directed by Bush Moukarzel and Ben Kidd, the co-directors and co-writers of Dead Centre. The creative team also includes co-writer Zoë McWhinney (Anthony and Cleopatra), design by Jeremy Herbert (Alice Trilogy), costume design by Mae Leahy (The Misanthrope), lighting design by Azusa Ono (A Mirror), composer and sound design by Kevin Gleeson (The Weir), and the video director is Grant Gee (Orlando).
The book Deaf Republic, which inspired this production, has earned numerous awards and nominations, including winning the National Jewish Book Award for Poetry, it was a Finalist for the National Book Award for Poetry, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and much more.
