After Sunday, a tender, complex, and thought-provoking debut play from Sophia Griffin comes to the Bush Theatre stage following its successful run at Belgrade Theatre. Book After Sunday tickets on London Theatre.
After Sunday is a play that takes place in a Caribbean cooking group at a medium-security hospital. It centers on occupational therapist Naomi and participants Ty, Daniel, and Leroy. This deeply human play explores mental health, trauma, institutional life, memory, and identity. Through real cooking on stage, the audience is transported into the cooking group as they prepare for the hospital’s Family Day; as the day gets closer, tensions threaten to boil over.
This touching play stars Aimée Powell, Corey Weekes, Darrel Bailey, and David Webber.
As the WhatsOnStage review said of the Belgrade Theatre production, “The cast is sensational. There is such a wealth of talent and experience packed into this production. Each actor commands the stage superbly, working together seamlessly to unfurl their character’s story.”
After Sunday in London has an excellent creative team, which includes writer Sophia Griffin, who is an alumnus of the Bush Writers’ Group. This is her first-ever produced play.
“I’m a character-driven writer,” Griffin said. “For me, it’s the characters and their journeys that make it special. It’s a play that meets these people where they are – in their messy, funny, tender, complex ways. We approach the storytelling with empathy and truthfulness, giving insight into a world that’s often misunderstood and into people who are rarely heard in wider society.”
The creative team bringing this story to life also includes director Corey Campbell, set designer Claire Winfield, composer XANA, costume designer Naomi Thompson, and lighting designer Ali Hunter.

After Sunday is an eagerly anticipated new production; this touching play is about connection, memories, trauma, and more. As the WhatsOnStage review said, “Divided into group sessions, the story unfolds through conversations and cooking. Director Corey Campbell has expertly punctuated these with short dance interludes which reflect the disconnect and struggle that are often hidden, subconscious or cannot be expressed through words.”
