About CARE

Experience the heartache of CARE, Alexander Zeldin’s emotionally compelling play surrounding the experiences of one family changed by grief and the care system. Book CARE tickets on London Theatre.

CARE is a play in which a single mum is struggling to keep her family together as her two pre-teen sons are grieving and constantly at odds. Their grandmother has taken a nasty fall, and she has subsequently been moved into a care home that she does not want to be in. Surrounded by the other elderly residents who miss their homes, their families, and their old lives, Grandmother slowly begins to see things in a new light.

CARE looks closely at the experience of ageing and the meaning of dependency in your adult years, while also holding on tight to the moments of tenderness and humour that find their way through the gaps of difficulties. Between loneliness and grief, the play gives audiences moments of joy in the most ordinary of circumstances.

CARE in London is written and directed by Alexander Zeldin, whose previous works include LOVE, The Confessions, and The Other Place. Following his amazingly popular The Inequalities trilogy, Zeldin makes his Young Vic debut with this new play that touches on themes of familial responsibility and, really, the circle of life.

This production boasts a formidable cast, including Linda Bassett, Rosie Cavaliero, Hayley Carmichael, Taru Devani, Richard Durden, Aoife Gaston, Llewella Gideon, William Lawlor, Ethan Mahony, Ann Mitchell, Diana Payan, Winston Sookhan, and Charlie Webb. Alongside the cast is a masterful creative team, including set design by Rosanna Vize, costume design by Natasha Jenkins, lighting design by James Farncombe, and sound design by Josh Anio Grigg.

With a story centred on old age and the stories of those among us who are so often hidden away from view, CARE is an intimate and emotional exploration of what it means to truly care for each other.
