About Broken Glass

Be brought into the world of Broken Glass, Arthur Miller’s beautiful drama set in Brooklyn, New York in 1938 as it graces the stage once more in this incredible new staging directed by Jordan Fein. Book Broken Glass tickets on London Theatre.

Sylvia Gellburg can’t seem to stop reading about the escalation of violence against the Jewish community in Germany. While others remain insistent that it’s a distant issue, or it’s a fleeting problem, or that it’s simply not for them to worry about at all, Sylvia is all-consumed by it. As she continues to spend much of her time and attention on the ever-growing problem, she begins to lose all use of her legs. Her paralysis is the unignorable manifestation of the fear and quiet pain of constantly being told that your feelings ought to be dismissed.

Her husband, Phillip, believes her symptoms to be entirely psychological, and dismisses it along with her ‘emotional’ hangups. But when Dr. Hyman enters the picture, everything shifts. Sylvia forms a powerful bond with Dr. Hyman, and from there, the fractures in her marriage become exposed. What was once unspoken, left unsorted, is brought to light.

Broken Glass is a play that was written later in Arthur Miller’s career, having premiered in 1994. It went on to win the Olivier Award for Play of the Year. This reimagining of an emotional, gorgeous show asks the audience one integral question: what happens when the world is on fire, and those closest to you are asking you to look away?

Broken Glass in London boasts a formidable cast, including Pearl Chanda, Eli Gelb, Alex Waldmann, Juliet Cowan, and Nancy Carroll. It also includes a masterful creative team with director Jordan Fein, set designer Rosanna Vize, costume designer Sussie Juhlin-Wallén, lighting designer Adam Silverman, sound designer Tom Gibbons, and casting director Julia Horan CDG.

This reimagining of Miller’s classic show is one you will not want to miss.
