About One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

Walk into the halls of a brutal psychiatric facility in Dale Wasserman’s stage adaptation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a reimagining of Ken Kesey’s classic novel. Book One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest tickets on London Theatre.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a play that follows Chief Bromden, a mute patient who has learned how to survive the horrific psychiatric facility he resides in by mostly becoming background noise. However, that only works for so long before Randle P. McMurphy enters the ward, shattering Chief Bromden’s routine. Unwilling to submit to the cruel orders of the ward, McMurphy challenges the unfair authority of Nurse Ratched, whose unwielding control over the patients is as inhuman as it is clinical. McMurphy quickly gathers a force behind him as the men around him begin to remember their agency and what freedom may look like if they’re able to achieve it.

The magnificent Clint Dyer directs this staging of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in London. It boasts a formidable cast including Aaron Pierre as McMurphy, Giles Terera as Dale Harding, Olivia Williams as Nurse Ratched, and Arthur Boan as Chief Bromden. The larger cast includes Samson Ajewole, Kazeem Tosin Amore, Ene Frost, Jason Pennycooke, Javone Prince, Mo Sesay, Matthew Steer, and Kedar Williams-Stirling.

The cast is joined by a masterful creative team, including set and costume design by Ben Stones, lighting by Chris Davey, sound by Benjamin Grant, and video by Gino Ricardo Green.

Dyer’s reimagining of a classic story reframes its source material through a more modern political lens as it poses questions of race, colonialism, and power structures that are used to suppress the marginalized. This production is a bold attempt to breathe new life into a cultural classic by shining a contemporary light on it.
