About 1536

Travel back in time to Essex during the Tudor period with 1536, a feminist play about gendered power imbalances and the power of female friendship as it transfers to the West End. Book 1536 tickets on London Theatre.

1536 is a play by Ava Pickett and directed by Lyndsey Turner. This comical historical drama is set during the year of Anne Boleyn’s murder; however, the show’s main focus is far from Anne. Instead, the audience goes on a journey with three seemingly ordinary women: Anna, Jane, and Mariella. These women’s lives are shaped by the devastating effects of what occurred in the royal palace, despite their distance from it.

As news spreads like wildfire regarding the fact that Henry VIII brutally turned against his queen, tensions flare high and spread farther and farther out, closer and closer to the homes of the three women in this story. Anna, Jane, and Mariella begin to recognize how easily a public act of violence by the king himself has affected how ordinary men treat their wives at home.

1536 in London is following a sold-out run at the Almeida Theatre, and is now transferring to the West End for a strictly limited run. Liv Hill, Siena Kelly, and Tanya Reynolds reprise their original roles, joined by Harry Bradley, Oliver Johnstone, George Kemp, Saroja-Lily Ratnavel, and Sydney Spencer.

Alongside this formidable cast is an incredible creative team, including designer Max Jones, lighting designer Jack Knowles, sound designer Tingying Dong, and composer and arranger Will Stuart.

1536 is equal parts funny as it is emotionally compelling, shining light on topics of misogyny and domestic violence; topics that are startlingly contemporary. It may be a historical play, but its themes hit home even today.
