About RENT

See Stranger Things star Gaten Matarazzo make his West End debut as Mark in RENT, Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical, as it returns to London for its 30th anniversary. Book RENT tickets on London Theatre.

Thirty years after it had a defining influence on the world of musical theatre, RENT in London makes new waves as it returns to the West End in a glimmering new restaging directed by Luke Sheppard. Set in New York City’s East Village, the musical follows a group of young artists as they learn how to navigate ambition and love in the face of loss and illness, trying to build their own lives on their terms.

RENT is a musical inspired by Puccini’s La Bohème, capturing the urgent energy of a generation that knows every moment counts. It’s a story that focuses on chosen family and community, and what it means to remain resilient in the face of great hardship. Its score includes some of the most beloved and recognisable songs in modern musical theatre as we know it.

Gaten Matarazzo stars as Mark, making this his West End debut. He is best known internationally for playing Dustin Henderson in Stranger Things. Matarazzo is also an experienced stage performer, with Broadway credits that include Sweeney Todd, Dear Evan Hansen, Godspell, and Parade. Further casting for this production is to be announced.

This West End staging is inspired by Luke Sheppard’s 2020 Hope Mill Theatre staging of RENT, and arrives right on time for the musical’s 30th anniversary. Sheppard stages the show, with choreography by Tom Jackson Greaves, set design by David Woodhead, costume design by Gabriella Slade, lighting design by Howard Hudson, and audio production and sound design by Paul Gatehouse.
