Cast recordings are a hugely important part of the musical theatre ecosystem. Often fans discover shows through recordings even before they get to see them (I certainly did with Hamilton), or, conversely, listening to a recording after a trip can enrich the experience of a work, allowing you to take your time with the lyrics and engage more fully with the score.

Happily, there are numerous cast recordings available for big London shows at the moment, from newcomers like the much-anticipated transfer of Tony-winner Stereophonic and Stephen Sondheim’s final musical Here We Are, to long-running hits like Moulin Rouge!.

Follow our guide to the top cast recordings and enjoy a dedicated listen wherever you are: on the bus, at the gym, or strutting down Shaftesbury Avenue just waiting to be discovered.

Here We Are

Must see
Sondheim

The late, great Stephen Sondheim’s final work premiered in New York, in a posthumous production, in 2023. Now London audiences get to see it at the National Theatre, featuring an impressive transatlantic cast that includes Rory Kinnear, Martha Plimpton, Jane Krakowski, Richard Fleeshman, and, reprising their roles, Denis O’Hare and Tracie Bennett.

Here We Are is inspired by Luis Buñuel films The Exterminating Angel and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, and sees a group of privileged friends trying to dine out together before their world descends into chaos. Sondheim’s scores are always incredibly rich, so this cast recording will definitely reward close attention.

Stereophonic

New play with music
Must see
Broadway

David Adjmi’s multi-Tony-winning creation is a play with music, rather than a musical, but the original songs – by Arcade Fire’s Will Butler – are so central to its story, and so brilliant, that it’s an incredible cast recording experience. In fact, you might find yourself becoming a hardcore fan of this fictional band even before you see the London production.

Stereophonic tells the story of a 1970s British-American group who are recording their second rock album. Various tensions, including romantic arguments, get in the way of their studio session, but the actual music is glorious, leading you to ask whether such drama is necessary in the creation of great art or a by-product. Either way, the songs are total bangers.

The Great Gatsby

1920s
Musical

The spectacular Broadway musical version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s seminal Jazz Age novel has come to the London Coliseum, so you can join Long Island newcomer Nick, reunited lovers Daisy and Jay Gatsby, and the whole colourful cast of characters in the West End and also via this cast recording.

The original Broadway cast was led by the talented Jeremy Jordan, Eva Noblezada, Noah J. Ricketts, Samantha Pauly, John Zdrojeski and Sara Chase, singing the belting songs written by Jason Howland and Nathan Tysen – including “For Her”, “New Money” and “My Green Light”.

Fiddler on the Roof

Popular
Classic musical

Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick and Joseph Stein’s show has been a staple of the musical theatre canon since it premiered in 1964. It centres on Jewish milkman Tevye, who believes faithfully in the cultural traditions of his village, but his three daughters challenge his ideas when they decide to marry for love – and the world is also changing around them.

Jordan Fein’s spine-tingling revival is transferring from Regent’s Park to the Barbican this summer. You can prepare for that theatre trip by choosing between numerous wonderful Fiddler recordings, such as the deluxe edition of the original Broadway cast recording led by Zero Mostel.

Shucked

Musical

Fiddler was the highlight of last year’s Regent’s Park season, and in 2025 we’re welcoming another exciting musical, this one a new work. Shucked took Broadway by storm in 2022, and Alex Newell – who sang the breakout number “Independently Owned” – made history as the first openly non-binary performer to win Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

That’s just one of many incredibly fun songs written by Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally for this (deliberately!) corny show set in the fictional Cob County. The score mixes a contemporary country-pop sound with classic musical theatre, and balances thoroughly silly puns with heartfelt emotion – and just a kernel of truth.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical

Must see
Pop
Musical

No other stage musical has as many songs as Moulin Rouge!, which actually tops the electrifying Baz Luhrmann movie by adding even more modern pop hits into its jaw-dropping medleys. There are more than 70 in all, so a fun challenge with the Broadway cast recording, led by Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, is just spotting all the brilliant needle drops.

The list of artists is staggering: Adele, David Bowie, Beyoncé, Lorde, T-Rex, Shirley Bassey, Elton John, Katy Perry, the Rolling Stones. My personal favourite is the “Backstage Romance” medley, featuring “Bad Romance”, “Tainted Love”, “Toxic” and “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)”, but “El Tango de Roxanne” is also unforgettable.
