The world premiere of The Sorcerer's Apprentice will be staged at Southwark Playhouse, it has been announced. Based on Goethe's poem, which went on to inspire Disney's Fantasia, performances will take place from 9 January - 13 Feb. 2021.

Set against the backdrop of the Northern lights, a sorcerer and his daughter must work together. But, as she discovers just how strong her magical powers are, will the town of Midgard be destroyed?

The cast includes David Thaxton, whose credits include the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera. Casting is completed by Tom Bales, Nicola Blackman, Dawn Hope, Mary Moore, Marc Pickering, Ryan Pidgen, Yazdan Qafouri, Vicki Lee Taylor and Kayleigh Thadani.

Southwark Playhouse is by Richard Hough and Ben Morales Frost, who have gender-swapped the original poem for this production. Charlotte Westenra directs, with choreography by Alan Williams, scenic and costume design by Scarlet Wilderink, lighting design by Anna Kelsey and sound design by Clancy Flynn.

This news follows confirmation that Southwark Playhouse will livestream productions in 2020, including The Poltergeist and musicals over consecutive weekends in December.
