The Light in the Piazza Information

Tony Award-winning musical The Light in the Piazza will receive its London premiere at the Royal Festival Hall in 2019, starring Renée Fleming and Dove Cameron making their West End debuts, with tickets now available.

Based on the 1960 novel by Elizabeth Spencer, The Light in the Piazza tells the story of a mother and daughter, Margaret and Clara Johnson, on vacation in Italy. Clara becomes besotted with a local named Fabrizio, but what starts as a love story takes darker turns as family secrets and conflicts come to the surface.

This musical adaptation, written by Adam Guettel and Craig Lucas, dramatises the story, and uses classical music and opera, rather than traditional pop music often associated with Broadway theatre.

Directed by Daniel Evans, the production will run at Royal Festival Hall from 14th June to 5th of July 2019, with tickets now on sale.

American soprano Renée Fleming is renowned across the world for her performances in operas such as La traviataLe nozze di Figaro, and in 2010, she performed during the Last Night of the Proms in London.

On stage, Dove Cameron has played Sophie Sheridan in Mamma Mia in Hollywood, and is has appeared in the Off-Broadway production of Clueless: The Musical.

The Light in the Piazza premiered on Broadway in 2005 after a development run in Seattle two years earlier. Directed by Bartlett Sher, it opened at the Lincoln Center in New York in April 2005, and ran for 504 performances starring Victoria Clark, Kelli O'Hara and Matthew Morrison.  In 2009, the musical got its European in Leicester directed by Paul Kerryson. The musical starred Lucy Schaufer and Caroline Sheen.

The musical won six Tony Awards from 11 nominations in 2005, including wins for best original score, best performance by a leading actress in a musical, and best orchestrations.
