The Merry Wives of Windsor is a play that was written around 1597, and it was published in 1602. The production was one of Shakespeare's first plays to be performed following the re-opening of theatres after the Interregnum. This beloved comedy was a spin-off of the Henry IV plays, which reimagined the character of Falstaff.
Since The Merry Wives of Windsor's first performance, it's been staged countless times worldwide, and it's inspired various other creative works, including plays and films. The 1966 film Chimes at Midnight (released in most of Europe as Falstaff) was written and directed by Orson Welles, and it starred Orson Welles as well. More recently, in 2021 Jocelyn Bioh adapted the play for NYC's Shakespeare in the Park put on by The Public Theater. It set the story in a community of West African immigrants in modern-day Harlem.
