A Day in the Death of Joe Egg Information

Toby Stephens and Claire Skinner star in a revival of the Paul Nichols play A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, directed by Simon Evans at Trafalgar Studios. Tickets are available now.

Nichols' play A Day in the Death of Joe Egg tells the story of a British couple, Bri and Sheila, who are on the edge of their marriage as they raise their only child, Josephine, who suffers from cerebral palsy. Caring for Josephine has taken up every second of the parents' lives since Josephine was born, and begins to take its toll on their marriage.

A Day in the Death of Joe Egg runs at Trafalgar Studios to 30th November.

Nichols' play premiered at Citizens Theatre in Glasgow, before it transferred to the West End's Comedy Theatre, and then on to Broadway where it was nominated for the Tony Award for best play.

Subsequent revivals include two Broadway productions, and a West End revival at the Ambassadors Theatre starring Clive Owen and Victoria Hamilton. It transferred to the Comedy Theatre, where Eddie Izzard later took over the role from Owen. Izzard and Hamilton reprised their roles in a Broadway transfer of the play, as well as a TV adaptation.

Toby Stephens last appeared in the West End in Oslo, which transferred to the Harold Pinter Theatre from the National Theatre in 2017. His previous stage credits include Betrayal at the Donmar Warehouse, Hamlet at the RSC, and Private Lives at Chichester Festival Theatre.

Claire Skinner recently appeared in the Bridge Theatre production of Barney Norris' Nightfall. Her other theatre credits include Deathtrap at the Noel Coward Theatre, Othello and The Winter's Tale at the National Theatre, and Florian Zeller's The Father at the Wyndham's Theatre.

Our review

Peter Nichols died just last month, aged 92, but here's living and welcome proof that a great playwright's work is bound to outlive him. In a career that also spanned premieres at the National and the RSC, his first major hit was A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, originally premiered at Glasgow's Citizens' Theatre in 1967, before transferring to the West End and then Broadway. Returning now for its second West End revival since then, it remains a shatteringly personal play and a deeply involving...
