The Pillowman Information

Martin McDonagh's chilling drama The Pillowman is set to return to London for a West End run, giving audiences another opportunity to experience the frightful play after it premiered at the National Theatre in 2003.

McDonagh's play follows the investigation into writer Katurian, who comes under surveillance after a spate of murders involving children in his town appear to closely resemble the narratives of his short stories.

Steve Pemberton will play Tupolski, the detective leading the investigation. Pemberton is best-known for starring in The League of Gentlemen, and, with comedy partner Reece Shearsmith went on to write and star in creepy anthology series Inside No. 9. On stage, Pemberton has starred in the musical The Drowsy Chaperone, the 2011 production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and the National Theatre's production of She Stoops to Conquer in 2012.

The role of Katurian will be played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, whose break-out role came when he played the titular superhero in the 2010 film Kick-Ass. His stage work includes productions of Macbeth and All My Sons.

Matthew Dunster will direct this new production. He has previously collaborated with McDonagh by directing his previous plays A Very Very Very Dark Matter, which explored the dark source behind Hans Christien Andersen's short stories, and Hangmen, which premiered at the Royal Court and is now running on Broadway.

Martin McDonagh's last play to run in the West End was The Lieutenant of Inishmore, which starred Aidan Turner at the Noel Coward Theatre in 2018, while his latest work, A Very Very Very Dark Matter, debuted at the Bridge Theatre last year.

Our review

Profoundly disturbing and intensely macabre, Martin McDonagh's new play provokes an ambivalent response. On the one hand his inventive imagination and ear for naturalistic dialogue is as sharp as ever, commanding both respect and attention but the sheer intensity of the horrors related will curdle all but the strongest of stomachs. As the play opens a young writer sits blindfolded in a cell, clearly awaiting interrogation. A detective (Jim Broadbent) enters and asks the prisoner Katurian (David...
