Be transported into the candlelit atmosphere of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse for this spectacular staging of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, revitalized by the magnificent Tim Crouch (An Oak Tree, I, Malvolio). Book The Tempest tickets on London Theatre.
The Tempest is a play that tells the story of Prospero, Miranda, Ariel, and Caliban, who have been stranded for many years on an island. While time seems to keep passing, they return to the same tale they have been telling themselves, one of betrayal and revenge, and a storm that might deliver a promise of redemption. But when strangers arrive after a shipwreck, the tale begins to change, and what was once told as a story begins to unfold, blurring what is being staged right in front of the audience’s eyes.
This reimagining of The Tempest by Tim Crouch is bold in all the right ways, entirely unafraid to break the fourth wall, and it invites audiences into the show itself. This production is unique from a traditional Shakespeare staging, with its own distinct visual language and a gorgeous atmosphere that is only heightened by candlelight.
Tim Crouch directs and stars as Prospero, with Naomi Wirthner as Ariel, Sophie Steer as Miranda, and Faizal Abdullah as Caliban. Included, as well, in the cast are Amanda Hadingue as Antonia, Jo Stone-Fewings as Alonso, Joshua Griffin as Ferdinand, Tyrone Huggins as Gonzalo, Mercè Ribot as Trinculo, Patricia Rodriguez as Stephano, and Colin Michael Carmichael as Sebastian.
The Tempest in London boasts a masterful creative team, including designer Rachana Jadhav, candlelight designer Anna Watson, and composer Orlando Gough. Together with the cast, they create a smashing production for The Tempest as you’ve never seen it before.
Since its first performance in 1611, The Tempest has been an audience favourite, and nearly 50 operas have been based on the now classic tale. This exciting new production promises a unique immersive experience unlike any previous staging.
