About Hex

Sleeping Beauty is awake! See the mythical fairytale musical Hex at the National Theatre.

Rather than focusing on princess Aurora, Hex centres around the fairy who must help the princess sleep. Deep in the woods, the lonely fairy looks for someone to dote over, so she’s ecstatic when she’s called to the palace. But, as the fairy sets out their sleep, dreams ultimately turn into nightmares. What happens when a blessing becomes a curse? Immediately, the fairy sets out on a hundred-year quest to make everything right. Can everything be happy ever after?

Although the Hex musical officially premieres in 2022, the Hex development process took two decades. In 2002, Rufus Norris’s Sleeping Beauty adaptation premiered at the Young Vic, translating Perrault's fairytale visions for a modern audience. 20 years later, the attention turns to the fairy.

Ironically, there was a theatre curse on Hex’s first outing too — a 2021 premiere was hijacked due to the Omicron variant, and the show never got its press night. Now a year later, and Sleeping Beauty’s slumber should come to an end.

Hex reunites Tanya Ronder and Rufus Norris, after their previous collaborations on Blood Wedding, Vernon God Little, and Table. Jim Fortune creates original music, returning to the National Theatre after writing songs for Mr Gum and the Dancing Bear and My Brilliant Friend.

What is a hex?

A hex is a type of spell which is typically associated with the dark arts. If someone has placed a hex on you, it typically means there is a curse that will follow the affected person, causing unpleasant things to happen.
