This seems to be the summer of reinvented classic musicals, from the moody Oklahoma! at the Young Vic to a revamped Legally Blonde at Regent’s Park Open Air. In that vein, Nikolai Foster dishes up his “gritty” Grease, which began Leicester Curve, toured the UK and is now playing in the West End. But is this the one that audiences want? Yes and no. Foster has gone back to Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey’s original stage musical version, rather than the John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John 50s...

Grease The Musical Information
Grease is the West End musical you need, oh yes indeed! Rediscover Grease in London as it returns to the West End in 2022. Grease tickets are available on London Theatre now.
The Grease musical follows the Burger Palace Boys and the Pink Ladies as they navigate the trials and tribulations of their senior year at Rydell High. Transfer student Sandy Dumbrowski speaks of her whirlwind summer romance with heartthrob Danny Zuko. Little does Sandy know that Danny’s also at Rydell High. Sparks fly as they reunite, but can they find true love by the lockers?
In Grease, you can join the Pink Ladies at their fun-filled sleepovers, see the kids of Rydell High dance it out at the high school hop, and be a part of this love letter to high school. These teens really do go together like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong.
While millions have seen the Grease film, did you know Grease was originally a musical? Grease on Broadway opened in 1971, and then the Grease London premiere came two years later. The Grease West End premiere opened at the New London Theatre (now named Gillian Lynne Theatre), with Richard Gere as Danny Zuko. Since then, Grease has been revived five times in the West End, and has been on numerous national tours.
Even if you’ve never seen Grease on stage before, you’ll know the songs if you’ve watched the 1978 film starring John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John and Stockard Channing. The Grease music, lyrics and storyline are by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, and songs include “Beauty School Dropout,” “Greased Lightnin’” and “Summer Nights.”
This Grease production will offer a slightly different take though, now featuring a grittier, tougher exterior. It’s led by direction from White Christmas’ Nikolai Foster and choreography by Arlene Phillips. Make sure you’re hopelessly devoted to West End theatre and see Grease in London.

There are numerous romantic film couples taking over West End theatres at the moment, from Vivian Ward and Edward Lewis in Pretty Woman: The Musical to the doomed love affair between Christian and Satine in Moulin Rouge! The Musical. The Dominion Theatre is adding to that tally: Rydell High’s Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski are strutting into town as Grease hits the West End. For a younger generation, the High School Musical trilogy of films are the ultimate American teen movies. They epitomise those idealistic adolescent moments: finding your love at high school, sleepovers with your besties, and forming lifelong bonds. However, the success of those 21st-century movies relies on the popularity of older teenage-led films which first captured the zeitgeist, and none managed it quite like Grease. The beloved story follows a group of Chicago high-schoolers as they...
Choreographer Arlene Phillips is no stranger to Grease. In 1993, she received an Olivier nomination for her Grease choreography. Nearly 30 years later, Phillips and Grease go together once more, as Grease heads to its London spiritual home, the Dominion, where it's currently playing for 26 weeks. But this Grease is unlike the musical film, and the show taps into the story’s hard truths. In recent years, the Grease story has faced backlash due to misogynistic tropes and a dated idea that a woman...
