Oklahoma! is the first musical to be written by the legendary songwriting duo Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein which, first performed in 1943, has been revived across the world several times and is a favourite of many musical theatre fans.
It is based on the 1931 play, Green Grow the Lilacs, and is set in farm country in 1906 where farm girl Laurey Williams is the subject of the affections of two suitors, a cowboy called Curly and a farmhand called Jud.
The musical features songs such as “Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’”, “People Will Say We’re in Love” and “The Farmer and the Cowman”. It was the first collaboration of composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein, who would go on to write more successful shows such as Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music.
