About Jack Absolute Flies Again

The patriotic play Jack Absolute Flies Again soars into the National Theatre for summer 2022. Jack Absolute Flies Again tickets are available on London Theatre now.

The Jack Absolute Flies Again play is set during and after the Battle of Britain. The title character serves his country by fighting in aerial dogfights, but his mission on land is to impress his old flame Lydia Languish. After fighting in World War Two, he’s up to any challenge. However, his moves are met with a hesitant Lydia, who wishes to be loved in her own ways. There’s misunderstandings aplenty and awkward confrontations for these lovers.

Jack Absolute Flies Again is based on Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s The Rivals, a five-act satirical play which joked about lavish lifestyles of 18th-century aristocrats. Thankfully, Jack Absolute Flies Again in London isn’t that long: the play boasts a zipping story by co-writers Richard Bean and Oliver Chris. They’ve previously worked together on the Olivier and Tony-winning play, One Man Two Guvnors. So expect garish comedy and hilarious lines in this entertaining play.

The production was originally scheduled to open at the National Theatre for the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain — in 2020. Sadly, the pandemic scuppered those plans, but Jack Absolute Flies Again will take over London in summer 2022. There’s a star cast too, led by Laurie Davidson as Jack Absolute. Caroline Quentin plays Mrs. Malaprop — a character whose frequent misspeaking words led to the origin of “malapropisms” in the English language. Kelvin Fletcher plays Dudley Scunthorpe and Natalie Simpson stars as love interest Lydia Languish.
