About Red Pitch

Tyrell Williams definitely scored with his hit debut play set in a south London football ground – and it’s back by popular demand. Following a sell-out run at the Bush Theatre, it’s now tackling the capital’s hip new venue @sohoplace, giving audiences another chance to catch this nimble show. Get your boots on and book your Red Pitch tickets on London Theatre.

Williams’s Red Pitch play follows three black teenagers, wannabe footballers, and lifelong friends. Confident Bilal has his dad in the corner – but plenty of pressure too. Omz has caring responsibilities for his younger brother and grandad, while goalie Joey is sensibly taking a course in business.

All three have a shot at making their dreams come true, with a tryout for football team QPR. But the world around them is changing, and not necessarily for the better as far as they’re concerned, with the council’s modernisation plans. Will they lose their community and their homes to gentrification?

Just like another recent West End hit, Dear England, you don’t have to know anything about football to be drawn into Williams’s writing and Daniel Bailey’s brilliantly detailed Red Pitch London production.

The Olivier Award-nominated play is just as much about the teenage experience, the intensity and occasional challenges of close friendships, family dynamics, and wider themes around how and where we live, and what makes a home.

It’s clear that the material has already struck a chord with audiences, following a successful debut run in 2022 and another encore run at the Bush Theatre last year. Now it’s coming to the exciting West End venue @sohoplace, which has championed plenty of new work – such as the hit musical The Little Big Things.

Kedar Williams-Stirling (Sex Education), Emeka Sesay (The Power) and Francis Lovehall (Small Axe) all reprise their roles in this latest run of the play.

Charming, Great characterisation, Great acting, Joyful, Delightful

See it if you love a character-driven drama; to see charming audience interactions or to warm your heart with a joy-filled play about male friendship

Don’t see it if you have other plans - no reason not to see this delightful, engaging play. It is character driven - less football focused than you'd think.

See it if you’d enjoy a slice-of-life drama about young men hoping a football career can rescue them from a life of struggle.

Don’t see it if you hate football?

Refreshing, Thought-provoking, Great acting, Funny, Entertaining

See it if This was really good. Great storytelling and drama from the 3 awesome actors involved. Simple set but totally believed everything - great !

Don’t see it if If you want a huge set or big west end number. This is small scale, as it's supposed to be - they've let the actors speak and it's power !
