About Richard III - Globe

Shakespeare's Richard III, a villainous tale of the lengths one man will go to for power, comes to the Globe. Book Richard III tickets on London Theatre.

Richard III in London tells the story of Richard of Gloucester. He desires to become the King of England and uses any means necessary, including violence, deceit, and manipulation, in pursuit of that goal.

This revival stars Olivier-winning actress Michelle Terry in the titular role of Richard. Helen Schlesinger (Straight Line Crazy) plays Buckingham, Sarah Finigan (Suffragette) plays King Edward and Mayor, Kibong Tanji (Tina—The Tina Turner Musical) plays Clarence and Stanley, and Marianne Oldham (Holby City) plays Elizabeth.

The show also has a talented creative team, including director Elle While, who is an associate artist of Shakespeare's Globe. James Maloney (Hamlet Shakespeare's Globe) is the composer, and E.M. Parry (Rotterdam) is the designer.

Richard III, Shakespeare's second longest play, was written between 1592 and 1594. One of the play's earliest performances was in November 1633, when Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria watched the show for the Queen's birthday.

Since then, the show has had numerous notable performances, including in 1944 when Laurence Olivier starred as Richard at the Old Vic. Olivier also directed, produced, and starred in the 1955 film Richard III, which earned many awards including a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination.

Other creative works have included nods to the beloved play, including the 2010 film, The King's Speech. In one scene, the king's speech therapist auditions for the role with lines from Richard III: "Now is the winter of our discontent / Made glorious summer by this sun [or son] of York."
