About Death of England: Closing Time

Death of England: Closing Time, the third and final play in the critically acclaimed Death of England play series, comes to at @sohoplace. Book Death of England: Closing Time tickets on London Theatre.

Death of England: Closing Time in London stars Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Sex Education, Dune) as Denise and Erin Doherty (The Crown, Chloe) as Carly. Together, through a combination of dialogue and monologue, these talented actors tell the story of picking up the pieces following the loss of Carly’s flower shop and Denise’s patty shop. The drama explores topics from race to family dynamics and cancel culture.

For the first time, all three Death of England plays are being staged in the West End during the same season. As with the other Death of England plays, this show can be watched as a stand-alone show or alongside the other two plays in the series. Audience members who have watched the other two shows will be pleased that updates are given on Michael and Delroy from Death of England: Michael and Death of England: Delroy.

Death of England: Closing Time is a play written by Clint Dyer and Roy Williams. The play trilogy began simply as a 10-minute filmed ‘micro-play’ commissioned by the Royal Court and the Guardian. From there, the story blossomed into the three-part ‘state of the nation’ series that it is today.

This play opened on 18 September 2023 and ran through 11 November 2023. Death of England: Closing Time was an instant hit with critics and audiences alike. As a 4-star review from the Guardian said, “Love, in the end, is the point: like Michael and Delroy, Carly and Denise are flawed, contradictory, at odds, but stand by each other in spite of it. You can’t help but be moved as they walk into the future together, hand in hand.”

Please note: the performance on 21st September 2024 will be filmed. While every effort has been made to make filming as discreet as possible, several cameras are present and visible in the auditorium. There will be 360-degree filming which will result in audience members being filmed and visible in any later broadcast. By attending you are agreeing to being filmed. Latecomers will not be admitted.
