About The Turn of the Screw

Be transported to a remote English manor in the gothic horror drama, The Turn of the Screw. Book The Turn of the Screw tickets on London Theatre.

The Turn of the Screw in London is the classic opera by Benjamin Britten based on Henry James’ 1898 novella, The Turn of the Screw. The opera premiered in September 1954 in Venice, and it had its British premiere on 6 October 1954. Since then, this audience-favourite opera has since been performed numerous times worldwide.

The show tells the story of a young governess arriving at a manor to care for two orphaned children. However, she soon discovers that the children and the grounds may be haunted when among many other things as she sees a figure in the tower and hears cries at night. The line between sanity and lunacy becomes hard to distinguish as tensions rise. As the opera continues, the tone gets darker, and Britten’s brilliant use of nursery rhymes only adds to the overall eeriness.

The Turn of the Screw is an opera with an expert cast including Ailish Tynan as the Governess, Victoria Nekhaenko as Flora, Holly Hylton as Flora, Gweneth Ann Rand as Mrs. Grose, Jerry Louth as Miles, Nicolai Flutter as Miles, Eleanor Dennis as Miss Jessel, Robert Murray as Peter Quint, and Alan Oke as Prologue.

The opera’s creative team is also exceptional, including conductor Duncan Ward and Charlotte Corderoy, who is conducting the last two shows. Both conductors are making their English National Opera debut. The creative team also includes director and designer Isabella Bywater (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs), lighting designer Paul Anderson (The Baker’s Wife), projection designer Jon Driscoll (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland), and librettist Myfanwy Piper.
